Exploring the Baltic Sea: A Unique Sailing and Cruising Experience

The Argo Yachting office in Germany is based in Neustadt on the north coast where the Baltic Sea offers a truly unique sailing experience, with its diverse landscapes, sheltered waterways, and a stunning array of islands. From the sweeping sand dunes in the south to the rugged cliffs in the north, the region is a paradise for sailors and nature lovers alike.

Neustadt: The Perfect Starting Point

Nestled on the Baltic coastline, the Argo Yachting office in Neustadt is ideally positioned for exploring nearby islands and marinas.  Just offshore, the Bay of Lübeck beckons with its picturesque harbours and a city centre rich in history, heritage, and museums.  While Germany may not traditionally be considered a beach holiday destination, Lübeck’s pristine beaches and sand dunes are a hidden gem worth discovering.  In the early 19th century, this area was even dubbed the ‘German St. Tropez’, attracting visitors in search of long, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Rostock and the Hohe Düne Marina

Heading east along the coast, you’ll reach the historic city of Rostock, accessible via the prestigious Hohe Düne Marina.  Known for its luxurious hotels and spas, this five-star marina, the only one of its kind in Germany, boasts 750 berths and world-class amenities.  Whether you're berthing a larger yacht or simply indulging in a weekend of relaxation, the marina's wellness resort offers the perfect retreat.

Rügen: Germany’s Largest and Most Breathtaking Island

Further along the coast lies Rügen, Germany’s largest island, renowned for its striking white chalk cliffs that rise over 100 meters above sea level.  As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rügen is a must-visit destination, offering impressive marinas and breathtaking natural beauty.

The Bay of Kiel: A Gateway to the Baltic

North of Neustadt, the Bay of Kiel serves as a key maritime passage, with vessels traveling through the Little Belt and Great Belt straits.  From here, you can cruise into the Kiel Fjords or the renowned Kiel Canal - one of the busiest shipping routes connecting Hamburg to the Baltic Sea.  The area’s expansive views and bustling maritime activity make it a fascinating stop for any cruising adventure.

Danish Islands: Hidden Treasures in the Baltic

Just beyond German waters, a collection of charming Danish islands awaits exploration.  Zealand, Funen, Als, and Langeland are among the many islands dotting the Danish Straits, offering quaint marinas, boutique markets, and an authentic taste of Scandinavian coastal life.

When to Sail the Baltic

While the Baltic cruising peak season is traditionally July and August, voyages can be enjoyed anytime between May and September.  Temperatures may be cooler, ranging from 11°C in May to 18°C in late August but you’ll benefit from fewer crowds and a more tranquil sailing experience during the shoulder season.

With its rich history, diverse landscapes, and world-class marinas, the Baltic Sea offers an enchanting alternative to more conventional sailing destinations.  Whether you're drawn to its scenic coastlines, historic cities, or peaceful island retreats, a voyage through these waters promises an unforgettable adventure.

Stefan Wilms from Argo Yachting’s Neustadt office is a local to the area and recommends attending the Sylt Polo in August or the Beach Polo in May for a great day out and the famous ‘Baltic Sea in Flames’ fireworks event in August.  He continues, ‘Pre-book the wonderful Rostock Marina in advance if you fancy stepping ashore for some 5-star hotel luxury and a great choice of restaurants, and Fehmarn Island is also definitely worth a visit for water sports enthusiasts.’

Contact the Argo Yachting office in Neustadt and speak to David for further information on the area and the Saxdor, Galeon and Pardo Yachts available and the range of pre-loved brokerage yachts available. Start your adventure.
